SMBFan :: NES :: Super Mario Bros. 2: Japan

Background

After Super Mario Bros. boomed worldwide, the sequel was already being made. Super Mario Bros. 2 (Japan) was virtually similar to Super Mario Bros. with tricky twists and turns that Japanese gamers would love.

 Plot

Again, King Koopa, the evil turtle/dinosaur hybrid, has terrorized the Mushroom Kingdom and taken it's Princess (Princess Toadstool) hostage. Mario must battle through eight worlds to find her and save her and the Mushroom Kingdom from this tyrant.

 The Story

With remarkable sales of SMB, Nintendo made their next in a series of three Super Mario NES games. This one, which was released in Japan, was at first glance similar, but introduced new tricks such as Poison Mushrooms and backwards warps.
The reason this game wasn't released as the Super Mario Bros. 2 in America is because Nintendo of America officials believed that the version of the game already released in Japan was too difficult and American gamers would not enjoy. We finally get a chance to play it in 1993 with the release of Super Mario All-Stars for the Super NES.

 Re-Releases

Super Mario All-Stars, SNES, 1993.
Super Mario Bros. Deluxe, GBC, ?
