Ah... Mario... the all-time biggest video game legend. How did he get to be what he was? Well...

Back when Nintendo was first starting out, Nintendo had bought a building to house their company. The landlord, who was named Mario, caught the eye of famous video-game designer, Shigeru Miyamoto.

The landlord was a man that simply resembled Mario, thus the character is born. But why a plumber?

Design factors make Mario a plumber. The restrictions of the NES gave him a certain design. Also, programmers say they wanted Mario to work hard to save people, thus the idea of a plumber...

Over the years Mario has developed. From a blocky-old 8-bit figure, to a well-rounded, realistic gaming hero of the future, he has turned the gaming world upside down.
